Popular Group Workouts in Seattle Fitness Classes

Leslie “Les” Mills is a retired New Zealand athlete. He represented his country in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games of the 1960s and 1970s. Mills opened his first gym in 1968, and today his name headlines an international company that provides choreographed workouts to health clubs. Many Seattle fitness classes use Les Mills workouts in group fitness programs.

BodyPump was the first Les Mills program to receive international distribution. BodyCombat, BodyFlow and CXWorks are also popular programs. Seattle fitness classes also offer Dance Sensation, yoga, Zumba and the Tabata regimen. This diversity of classes gives Washingtonians a variety of formats, instructors and music to choose from.

BodyPump is a weight-based group fitness class. It was initially designed to attract men to aerobics. This hour-long class features eight different muscle group tracks as well as warm-up and cool-down sessions. Some Seattle gyms offer shorter “express” classes, and others combine BodyPump with CXWorks for core fitness training.

BodyCombat is a high-energy class inspired by martial arts. Nearly an hour in length, it combines strength training with karate, taekwondo, t’ai chi, boxing and other disciplines. The workout is designed to improve bone density, lung functioning and heart health. Seattle health clubs often combine a shorter version of BodyCombat with CXWorks.

BodyFlow, also called BodyBalance, is a program of careful stretching and controlled breathing. It combines Pilates, t’ai chi and yoga. This holistic workout builds flexibility and strength. It also promotes awareness, calmness and a feeling of balance and harmony. A fusion class combines BodyFlow with CXWorks.

CXWorks is a 30-minute core workout designed to improve overall fitness. Some of the best Seattle fitness classes combine this basic workout with the specialized Les Mills classes mentioned above. By exercising with a group, Washingtonians can improve their physical fitness while they bond and grow with their classmates.

Dance Sensation

Latin beats are popular in group fitness classes, but Dance Sensation allows participants to groove to other sounds too. Choreographed to hip hop music and other contemporary styles, this popular fitness class combines simple, athletic moves with high-energy fun.

Fitness experts say yoga is on par with aerobic exercise as one of the best practices for the mind, body and spirit. The yoga classes in Seattle health clubs are led by experienced instructors. They focus on flexibility, strength, relaxation and breathing.

Zumba is fitness class that contains elements of dance and aerobics. It combines Latin music and other international rhythms with easy-to-perform moves. Designed for people of all ages and fitness levels, Zumba improves muscle strength and cardiovascular health.

Tabata Regimen

The Tabata regimen is a form of high intensity interval training (HIIT). It alternates short, intense exercises with longer, less-intense recovery times. Tabata workouts improve athletic conditioning, blood sugar metabolism, fat burning and more.
